I kept Brooklyn hitched at my side as we ambled out. Rufus stayed behind and took the elevator back up. That left me and Brooklyn alone with the witch.
With blonde braided hair and tanned skin, she stood in the center of the foyer, arms crossed. She wore a thin yellow velvet dress, slits up to her hips on either side, revealing a mixture of tattoos and henna on her thighs.
âKade,â she hissed. Her voice was low and raspy with a hint of a French accent.
âNightshade, I presume. We were just leaving.â
âWhy have you not checked in with the court? You know the rules.â As her hands slithered up to her throat, wrapping around the pendant at her neck, I noticed more swirls of ink. They decorated her fingers and wrists.
I sighed. âI wasnât planning on being here that long. But we do have some things to discuss. Just not now. I need to get Miss Luca home⦠Elle nâest pas des nôtres.â Sheâs not one of us.
âIâm well aware what your companion is. And it is highly inappropriate. Do not bring her back here⦠jusquâà ce quâelle soit immortelle.â Until sheâs immortal. The witchâs eyes glowed green, deep like the color of absinthe.
It amused me that we were speaking French in front of my little fake fortune teller who had pretended to speak it when weâd first met. âOf course,â I drawled. âI meant no disrespect.â
Brooklyn was a tough chick but even she could sense Nightshadeâs power. She had an iron grip on my hand which I was rather enjoying. But the witch never made eye contact once. She kept her steely gaze only on me.
âSeek me out alone next time youâre in town and weâll get to what needs to be discussed. Iâll see you out now.â
I pulled Brooklyn with me toward the door, disappointed that we wouldnât get to have that after dinner drink by the fire. I knew she wanted to look at those paintings some more. I gave her hand a squeeze and whispered, âNext time, baby girl.â
âOh, and Monsieur Vincent, Iâll take your key for now. You can have it back at our next meeting.â Nightshade held out her delicate palm, revealing she had those intricate markings on her palms as well.
I chuckled and handed it over. As if I needed a key to get in. I was a siphon. I could drain her magical wards with my bare hands. But I wouldnât. Not unless provoked. She eyed me like a fox, fully aware of what I was capable of.
âIâll be in touch.â With a swift shift of my shoulder, I ushered Brooklyn out, shielding her with my body just in case.
Nightshade snickered as we passed. She would tell the others we were here. All the witches were loyal to the LeRoux court. They ran this city, and everyone answered to them. Now I just had to figure out how to tell Brooklyn she couldnât come back here until she was one of us.
My driver was already waiting outside for us.
